Peripheral Nerve Stimulation: Direct Treatment for Neuropathic Pain

Electric nerve stimulation is not a new concept; we have used nerve stimulation treatments with our patients to treat a variety of pain symptoms by sending small electrical pulses to the spine. However, for those patients suffering from diabetic neuropathy and other localized nerve pain, the use of peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) treatments can result in a prolonged relief.

What Is Peripheral Nerve Stimulation?

Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) is a treatment in which electric impulses are used to block out pain signals. Most electric stimulation treatments focus on the spinal cord, but PNS stimulates the nerves at the pain’s source by sending targeted electro impulses to specific nerves (in the legs and feet, for example) to help treat pain.

What Kind of Pain Can Be Treated with PNS?

In addition to diabetic neuropathy pain, PNS can be used to treat shoulder pain, phantom limb pain (for patients who have had a limb amputated), complex regional pain syndrome , osteoarthritis, and other forms of pain in the extremities.

How Does Peripheral Nerve Stimulation Work?

The procedure for PNS requires your pain management doctor to insert under the skin a small electrode through a hollow needle, targeting the nerve that requires stimulation. The electrode leading from your skin is then connected to an external pulse generator. The pulse that is generated helps block pain signals, giving you ongoing relief from the pain you’re experiencing.

How Long Does the Procedure Take?

Implanting the electrode is an outpatient procedure conducted in our office and takes about 30 minutes. The implant location will be covered with a waterproof bandage, and you will need to keep the electrode for approximately two months, after which it can be removed. There is no need for an incision, so you’re able to return to work or other normal activities right away.

How Effective Is Peripheral Nerve Stimulation?

Even after the electrode is removed, you should continue to experience pain relief from the treatment. While results depend on the person and the condition, most patients experience significant and long-lasting pain relief from the procedure, which can be repeated as needed.
